I am an not exaggerating when I say that my entire life I have been training for this one evening, a viewing of the original Sister Act movie complete with a live gospel choir in a church. Only in London could such a brilliant evening take place. I don't know how this idea has never occurred before to me because it is freaking brilliant.
My love for the Sister Act franchise knows no bounds. I mean obviously I'm a huge fan of the original but I think we can all accept that Sister Act 2 is far superior especially when it comes to sing-alongs. I mean hello Lauryn Hill?!! My obsession can be documented back to a casual warm up lip synching to "Oh Happy Day" on the Seussical set with Alison and Julie complete with fellow actor Sarah yelling acting directions at us. Somewhere in the land of Facebook there is video evidence of this and my unfortunate choice of a panda toque(because everyone should own an animal toque at some point!!). I remember the entire cast of West Side Story piling into the female dressing room to belt out Joyful Joyful at the top of our lungs for our reshow warmup and spending way too many drives to rehearsal learning the rap part with my friend Daniel. We've still got it for the record. The piece de resistance for me though is of course the classic Sister Act 1 medley that Alison and I performed at a few cabarets complete with choreography. I always felt it was a success if I can made it through the epic medley and only laughed a handful of times. To this day I cannot get through that thing without laughing. It just makes me so happy.
This brings me to this past Saturday and my perfect evening. I couldn't think of anyone else I'd rather go with in London than Daniel. As soon as I saw the ad on Facebook I messaged him telling him we had tickets and he had to come. Arriving at St. Marylebone Parish Church I was filled with excitement and pure childhood giddiness. The lineup was long and it was nice to see we weren't the only diehard Sister Act fans. We had our wristbands. We had our popcorn. We had an entire pew to ourselves. Daniel and I were ready to belt our faces off and do some serious shoulders. As soon as the first Vegas medley and the choir started singing, I was in heaven. I'm pretty sure everyone around us missed the memo to singalong but dang it I did not care. For two and half hours we sang, we shimmied, and we laughed our faces off. To be honest I totally forgot how funny the original was, and seeing it on a big screen there were so many things I'd missed. As the finale of "I will follow him" final chords came to a close, I was so happy. It was the perfect evening...or so I thought. As the crowd was cheering, thanking the choir for an epic evening off came their robs to reveal brightly coloured t-shirts. Daniel and I literally looked at each other and screamed. It was like they knew what the audience really wanted and man oh man did they deliver. The UGCY choir ended the evening in epic fashion with everyone dancing and singing along to...JOYFUL JOYFUL!!! I left with the biggest smile of all time. This is a night I will never forget. Amacoast Cinema made this Sister Act fan the happiest girl ever.
I would say I hope they continue this with other movies, but let's be serious is anything going to be better than watching Sister Act with a live gospel choir?... well Sister Act 2 but we already knew that!!
